Japan gains observer status ahead of return to U.N. Security Council

Yoshifumi Okamura, Japan's deputy ambassador to the United Nations, attends a U.N. Security Council meeting in New York on Nov. 20, 2015, the first day of Tokyo's eligibility for observer status in the council gained six weeks ahead of the start of its stint as a nonpermanent member. Japan was elected unopposed to the council's Asia-Pacific region seat in October for a two-year term beginning in January, a record 11th time to serve as a nonpermanent member among U.N. member countries.
